Every divorce is different. I have had cases that have taken a month and unusual cases that have take a year. Timelines vary depending on each legal action and each set of facts that need to be addressed. Time is also needed for drafting documents, getting information from clients and possibly attending Alliterative Dispute Resolution (ADR), in the for of Mediation or Early Neutral Evaluation. It will also depend on how soon the Court can schedule necessary hearings. The Court has their own calendar to schedule cases and each party and their attorney are informed of when their case may be heard. Attorneys have no control over the Court's calendar.
The cost of any legal matter depends on many factors. It may depend on how agreeable the parties are to complete the process and if the parties are able to come to an agreement amicably on their own. It will also depend on if your case needs to go to Court and be litigated. Every legal action is different so there is no way to give an exact price. Each case takes on a life of its own based on who the parties and the attorney are. Most attorneys use an hourly rate, so it also depends on how often the attorney and the client need to discuss and work on their case. There is also the Court Filing fee to file the case with the Court.
If you have a child with someone you were not married to, the hospital may have had you sign what is called a Recognition of Parentage (ROP). You may have also had your name put on the child's birth certificate. By signing a ROP this does not give a parent any rights to the child except it does allow that parent to go to Court and get rights such as custody and/or parenting time with their child.
